The poplar, often planted in wetlands at the edge of the water, grows rapidly. It was considered by the ancients, for its virtues, as a shield tree and its buds were already used for the manufacture of the famous "poplar ointment" of yesteryear. Several known properties of poplar bud derive from those of propolis and support respiration.
